The lowland, marshy jungle at the foot of Maoke Mountains. In the Pulau River basin there are the last enclaves of the Neolithic Era. The Korowai Batu people is one of the few remaining tribes that still uses handmade stone tools. Cut off from the outside world, hunter-gatherer clan live according to the ancestor’s tradition, cultivating ritual cannibalism, tribal wars, and trying to maintain their identity facing the pressure of Western civilization.

Anna and Jakub Urbański
Biologists, travellers, photographers. Members of the Polish division of The Explorers Club. Authors of several photographic exhibitions about Papua and a large ethnographic collection for the Museum of Asia and the Pacific. Since 2005 they have been regularly travelling to Papua, documenting the art, rituals and daily life of indigenous peoples of Papua.
