Walking Under Water
Poland, UK 2013; 76’
dir. Eliza Kubarska

Eliza Kubarska’s enchanting documentary drops anchor just off the coast of magnificent Borneo and plunges us into the traditions and lore of the Badjao tribe.

“Being transported into other worlds, cultures and someone else’s shoes—or fins in this case—is the power of documentary films… Reminiscent of the classic documentaries of Robert Flaherty, Walking Under Water is an exquisite and lyrical experience.”—Hot Docs Jury (source: http://www.viff.org/festival/films/f12277-walking-under-water)

The Look of Silence
Denmark, Finland, Indonesia, Norway, 2014; 99’
dir.
Joshua Oppenheimer

The Look of Silence is Joshua Oppenheimer’s powerful companion piece to the Oscar-nominated The Act of Killing. Through Oppenheimer’s footage of perpetrators of the 1965 Indonesian genocide, a family of survivors discovers how their son was murdered, as well as the identities of the killers. The documentary focuses on the youngest son, an optometrist named Adi, who decides to break the suffocating spell of submission and terror by doing something unimaginable in a society where the murderers remain in power: he confronts the men who killed his brother and, while testing their eyesight, asks them to accept responsibility for their actions. This unprecedented film initiates and bears witness to the collapse of fifty years of silence. (source: http://thelookofsilence.com/)

reż. Michael Madsen

THE VISIT is a documentary with comedy elements, and a philosophical exploration of our fear of strangers through the ultimate threat to our self-image: The discovery of Alien Intelligent Life.

In Vienna lies the UN-city, with its late 1970’s architecture and its extra-territorial status not unlike a giant spacecraft that has landed in the middle of the civilized world. Inside this impressive institution representing our belief in humanity, resides the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs – the OOSA.

THE VISIT opens with a close-up of an animal. It instinctively reacts to something unknown. Inside the OOSA, a phone rings. Deputy Director-General, astro-physicist, Dr. Mazlan Othman, is informed that an alien has arrived… (filmmakermagazine.com)

In the Basement
Austria 2014; 85’
dir. Ulrich Seidl

“The basement in Austria is a place of free time and the private sphere. Many Austrians spend more time in the basement of their home than in their living room, which often is only for show. In the basement they actually indulge their needs, their hobbies, passions and obsessions. But in our unconscious , the basement is also a place of darkness, a place of fear, a place of human abysses.“ Ulrich Seidl

The film sketches Austrians’ relationships with their basements, and also looks for answers to the questions of what makes them different and whether such special characteristics exist at all. This film tour through the everyday lives of Austrian cellars managed to find answers and even ask some new questions, thereby shining a little light on facts normally hidden beneath the ground. We Come As Friends
France, Austria 2014; 110’
dir: Hubert Sauper

WE COME AS FRIENDS is a modern odyssey, a dizzying, science fiction-like journey into the heart of Africa. At the moment when the Sudan, the continent’s biggest country, is being divided into two nations, an old ‘civilizing’ pathology re-emerges – that of colonialism, clash of empires, and yet new episodes of bloody (and holy) wars over land and resources.

The director of DARWIN’S NIGHTMARE takes us on this voyage in his tiny, self-made flying machine out of tin and canvas, he leads us into most improbable locations and into people’s thoughts and dreams, in both stunning and heartbreaking ways. Chinese oil workers, UN peacekeepers, Sudanese warlords, and American evangelists ironically weave common ground in this documentary.

If “history does not repeat itself, but rhymes”, WE COME AS FRIENDS bares witness to this disquieting reality – it is a complex, profound and humorous cinematic endeavor – a
tale of very old and rather sinister verses.
