Future Shorts Winter

The new year inclines to the summaries and thoughts on the passing time, but also towards the spectacular plans for the future. The winter selection of Future Shorts fluctuates around the broadly understood category of time. The selection of films includes a documentary portrait of a watchmaker who “creates” time, the nostalgic journey of the heroine of the film “Cilaos” related to reconciliation with the past, while the optimistic dimension of time as waiting for new experiences can be found in the story of Joan, eager for new challenges and looking forward to the future. Certainly, you will find yourself in one of these charismatic characters.

Selected shorts:

The Watchmaker
A poetic portrait of an Iranian watchmaker, whose philosophical musings on craft invite us to reflect on how we engage with time in a fast-paced world. Moving between his colourful pared-down home and workshop, and the streets and windswept marshes of East London, we discover the horologist’s ascetic and beautiful private world.

The Summer Movie
It’s summer. Philippe is driving with Aurélien and his 9-year-old son, Balthazar. No one gives a damn about the people on vacation, highway rest stops, the August light, and that dismays Philippe. He wants to leave. Balthazar keeps him from that.

The Combine
An experimental portrait of a combine harvester for the latest from synth-pop music artist John Maus.

Cilaos
To keep the promise she made to her dying mother, a young woman sets off to find her father, a fickle man she has never known. On the way, she discovers he is in fact dead, but, driven by the bewitching rhythms of the Maloya, a Reunion Island ritual singing and musical tradition, she does not abandon her goal: she must find her father.

Wild Horses
Joan’s efforts at teenage rebellion are frustrated by her illness and her overbearing mother, until her increasingly vivid dreams and an overzealous tutor inspire her to realise her independence.

Green Screen Gringo
Behind a green screen, a foreigner finds his way in an enchanting – and yet turbulent – Brazil. Where the streets are a stage for politics, art and affection, a gringo can only watch. The result is a mixtape-portrait of modern day Brazil seen through the eyes of the visitor.
