Krystyna Stańko – Novos Anos

Novos Anos is the eighth album by Polish Jazz vocalist Krystyna Stańko, recorded with her regular wonderful Baltic crew which includes vibraphonist Dominik Bukowski, guitarist Marcin Wadolowski, bassist Piotr Lemanczyk and guest Brazilian drummer / percussionist Ze Luis Nascimento. Trumpeter Marcin Gawdzis guests on two tracks and drummer Lukasz Zyta on three tracks. Together they perform eleven songs (one is repeated twice), six of which were composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the rest by different composers like Chick Corea, Mongo Santamaria and others, all with a distinct samba and bossa nova character. All the songs use English lyrics.

Gifted with an original timbre, Krystyna Stańko is one of the greatest jazz vocalists and songwriters in Poland. Once a graduate from the Faculty of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Katowice, she is jazz vocal teacher at the Music Academy in Gdansk for almost a decade. Through her career she has recorded 9 albums, both with original music and in collaboration with other artists. Krystyna is working with leading Polish jazz musicians as Dominik Bukowski, Piotr Lemańczyk, Irek Wojtczak, Cezary Konrad, Przemek Jarosz, Marcin Wądołowski on a permanent basis. She was twice nominated for the Fryderyki awards and for the 25th anniversary of her artistic work on she received the Cultural Award of the President of Gdansk in 2014.

Her albums Secretly (2010), with jazz arrangements of songs by Peter Gabriel, and Kropla Słowa (2012) earned excellent reviews and she toured extensively with the material of them both in Poland and abroad. Her critically acclaimed latest album Snik, inspired by the region of Kashuby, containing elements of folklore and a large dose of improvisation, was released in June 2014. In the framework of the International Ladies Jazz Festival 2014 in Gdynia she has prepared a special project, Krystyna Stanko and her Jobim, with the participation of her students and graduates. The recording sessions of her forthcoming album, Novos Anos, took place in autumn 2016, featuring Brazilian percussionist virtuoso Luis Nascimento along with her regular band members Dominik Bukowski and Piotr Lemańczyk.
