The meeting with the authors after the performance hosted by Olga Gordiejew

“Thumbelina” is one of the most famous Andersen’s fairy tales. Although the search for sexual identity is often pointed out in his tales, according to the author they are targeted at children. Still, the very  first words of “Thumbelina” give rein to an adult’s imagination: “There was once a woman who wished very much to have a little child, but she could not obtain her wish.” Medical science today can successfully help in such situations, no necessarily by prescribing seeds to be planted in a pot… The adventures of a little defenceless girl are the starting point for an alternate version of Thumbelina. Eight actors, using different theatrical conventions, in a funny, unpretentious way reveal things which  often tend to be simplified and infantilized. The fresh look at Andersen’s fairy tale is achieved by means humour and puppets which allow for not indecent depicting of the heroine’s ambiguous adventures. The performance is the result of a meeting of two independent theatres, two generations and two theatrical languages – drama and puppetry.

Montownia Theatre is one of the first independent theatre groups in Poland, founded in 1996 by Warsaw PWST graduates; by critics considered the most important one. It consistently defines its own model of the theatre – an independent, free from bureaucracy, open to unusual ideas and ready to support other artists.
