On the Trail of Roadside Shrines and Crosses

At the exhibition, you can see photos of roadside crosses and chapels, which (in some cases still) perform important religious and social functions. They have also become a permanent element of the landscape of their neighborhoods.

The exhibition consists of two parts. The first is the exhibition “On the Trail of Roadside Chapels of the Suchowola Municipality” created by the local Center of Three Cultures, the second – the exhibition “Białystok Rural Crosses” created in cooperation with the Białystok Cultural Center and CTC. Apart from similar functions and intentions, such as protection or thanksgiving, the objects are linked by their rural origins. The most noticeable difference is their surroundings – the rural landscapes contrast with the blocks and sidewalks. It is also worth emphasizing that while the chapels still perform their functions, the crosses – although usually well-kept – do not fulfill local sacral functions.
