Berjozkele: Yiddish Lullabies and Evening Songs

August 16th, 2020, 7 PM
Planty Park
free admission

Berjozkele is a music project that reinterprets traditional and pre-war songs in Yiddish in a modern way, with mood and themes related to night, silence and sleep. Many of them were popular in Poland and the Eastern Borderlands at the beginning of the 20th century and in the interwar period, they belonged to the repertoire of famous artists of that time. Other songs are unknown or forgotten. A very important feature of these compositions are texts, sometimes anonymous, traditional, often written by Yiddish poets. They testify to the talent of pre-war artists and the richness of Yiddish culture.

Lullabies are by design intriguing – functioning on the border between waking and sleeping; musical guides to the subconscious mind, memories, childhood. Berjozkele members made a very careful selection to create a stylistically coherent program in terms of emotions contained in these songs, and at the same time, diverse. With the help of minimalist musical means, they often brought these more than century-old compositions back to life, giving them a contemporary fascinating form with the help of both electronic and acoustic instruments.

Featuring:
Ola Bilińska – vocals, synthesizer, percussion, looper
Michał Moniuszko – double bass, mandolin, sampler
Kamil Szuszkiewicz – trumpet, electronics, synthesizer
