30/FREEDOM
Two types of freedom have been distinguished since Hegel: “freedom from something” and “freedom to something”. The first is freedom understood as the absence of external coercion, the second is freedom of choice. In 1989, the concept of freedom functioned primarily in the sense of “freedom from” enslavement, hypocrisy and persecution of the communist system. After 1989, the concept took on other meanings. This part of the exhibition refers to the personal experiences of the characters, focusing on the criterion of “freedom to something”. What does freedom mean for a Polish citizen living here and now?

100/POLAND
Family memory, individual lives form a mosaic depicting contemporary Poland, diverse, modern but also having serious problems. The most popular Polish names were the key to choosing the heroes. Landscapes, portraits and their statements, often very fragmentary, show what we often don’t notice on a daily basis.

Piotr Wójcik
Photojournalist, documentary filmmaker, lecturer at the Cinematography Department of the National Film, Television and Theater School in Łódź, president of the Picture Doc Foundation. A photojournalist since 1989, in the years 2000-2011 the head of the photography department of “Gazeta Wyborcza”. Currently, as a freelancer, he makes video reports for “Gazeta Wyborcza” and the French news portal Mediapart.
