Mali Blues
Germany 2016, 93′
dir.: Lutz Gregor

Mali (western Africa) is the birthplace of blues, a musical tradition which, along with the flourishing of slave trade, reached American cotton fields across the Atlantic.

Mali is a secular country, but Islam is its dominant religion. The Islamists called music the invention of Satan and forbade it in the northern territories ruled by them. Malian artists in the face of sharia are fighting for peace and freedom of expression. Today, music and musicians from Mali are in great danger.

“Mali Blues” documentary follows the 4 artists: Fatoumata „Fatou” Diawara, Bassekou Kouyate, Master Soumy and Ahmed Ag Kaedi. We listen to their songs, watch concerts and believe that music is change, music is life.
