“Poland is the protagonist in our play, it is all about Her. We tell a tale of the past, present, and predictably of the future, through the popular and exalted notion of Life’s Sacrifice for Poland. As a nation we celebrate in a peculiar way the Romantic ideas of uprising, glorious death and sacrifice. Our performance dissects and challenges them all against the contemporary situation. And that is what makes it tragicomic.

The title refers to Maria Janowska’s literary ideas (Zapolska was a pseudonym) rather than her biography or specific works. Aside from her plays, satiric commedies and novels, she was an excellent oserver of public affairs.
The play on words in the title on the one hand alludes to her comments and prognoses, including the notorious priggishness, on the other hand it points at what fuels our patriotism, complexes, myths and suicidal insurrections.

As she placed her literary mirror before the Nation a hundred years ago, we so do again, curious to see a new reflection of POLSKA (ourselves) in it, but also what is ZA (behind) us.” – Agata Biziuk
