The band was formed as a trio in Chicago in 1998. Its name traces origins to a cargo ship, which singer and guitarist Jeff Massey saw in a port on Lake Michigan. Stylistically, The Steepwater Band is a tribute to British blues, influenced by modern rock music. Although Jeff Massey, Tod Bowers, and Joe Winters began as an orthodox blues trio, for years they have not resisted the influence of psychedelia, jazz, or rock. Over time, they turned into a quartet (in 2012 they were joined by a guitarist Eric Saylors).

In 2000 they appeared on Chicago Blues Festival for the first time. A year later they released their first full length album titled Brother to the Snake. Currently, they have over a dozen audio and video publications. At the moment, they are promoting their sixth studio album Shake Your Faith. Their songs have appeared in many films and tv shows. They perform in the United States and Europe.
