Twinkle Brothers & Trebunie Tutki (UK / Jamaica / Poland)

The idea of mixing Jamaican and Polish culture changed our perception of native ethnic music and significantly contributed to the popularization of reggae by the Vistula river. The new musical vision has also become a global phenomenon of world music.

Twinkle Brothers were founded in 1962 in Jamaica and today they are a canon of roots reggae. Brothers Norman and Ralston Grant were laureates of local pop and mento music competitions, and in 1968 they won the title of the best vocal group on the island. They repeated this success a year later with an additional reward for Norman as a soloist. In 1975 they released the album “Rasta Pon Top”. Soon the London record company Virgin Records started to publish their records in Europe and beyond. The albums “Love”, “Praise Jah”, “Countrymen” became reggae bestsellers. Norman Grant decided to try his hand as a producer and publisher at Twinkle Music, releasing Twinkle Brothers’ biggest hit in Great Britain: “Me No You – You No Me” (1981). In January 1982, Twinkle Brothers sang the song “Battlefield” on the album “Underground”, and on its cover there was the catchphrase “Solidarność”. In 1988, they came to Poland for the first time to participate in the Róbrege festival and have been returning many times since then. In 1991 they recorded a session with a Goral folk band Trebunie Tutki. A few mixes were made by the famous producer Adrian Sherwood. The album “Higher Heights” was released in Great Britain in 1992, and a year later on a cassette in Poland by Kamahuk. Unusual interest in the album allowed to release further fruits of cooperation between the Jamaicans and Gorals: „Comeback Twinkle 2 Trebunia Family”, „Our Twinkle Home”, „W Sherwood”, „Songs of Glory/Pieśni Chwały” and dub versions of the first joint recordings. The albums from the series have received titles such as “Album of the Month” in Great Britain, “The Event of WOMEX Musical Fair” in Berlin, or the third position in the list of “CD of the 10th Anniversary” of the World Charts Europe EBU. Up to now, Twinkle Brothers have recorded about 60 albums and countless singles. They have been performing all over the world.

Trebunie-Tutki is a musician family from Biały Dunajec, who has been singing for generations, which has evolved from a Goral band to a concert band at the largest world music festivals in Europe, Asia and North America. The love of tradition and fidelity to Goral traditions does not limit the work of the band, which cooperated not only with the Jamaicans but also with musicians from Georgia, Voo Voo or Tymon Tymański. They create new Goral music, developing and enriching the indigenous tradition with new melodies, contemporary texts and avant-garde arrangements.

When Afro Celt Sound System appeared on the music scene in 1995, their power of influence was amazing. This is a band that, like no other before, has combined West African sounds, traditional Irish music and modern dance rhythms.
The inspiration for the project was the collaboration of Simon Emmerson, a British producer and guitarist, with an afro-pop music star, the Baaba Maal band. In 1996, he led the band members to meet traditional Irish musicians to see what kind of music the two groups would create.He also introduced dance electronic rhythms to this mix. The musicians recorded their first album “Volume 1: Sound Magic” in the studio of Peter Gabriel in a week. Most of their albums have appeared in the cult ethno label Real World Records, and the band regularly performs at WOMAD festivals organized by Gabriel in various parts of the world.
Afro Celt Sound System remains provocative, enigmatic and unclassifiable: „We eliminate the categories of world music, rock and African music. We leave an open door to communicate with each other.” When they added new touches to their music: Indian bhangra, Arabic influences, dub reggae and many others, they always did it in a way that only strengthened their sound and emphasized openness.
In 2016, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the band released the album “The Source”. Two years later – „Flight”, the eighth studio album, devoted to the subject of migration, refugees and environmental protection, nominated for the record of the year by the prestigious world music magazine “Songlines”. It invited three music collectives to collaborate with the album: Amani Choir (its musical director Emmanuel Yogolelo comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has the status of a refugee); Stone Flowers (supported by Music Action International, a charity that helps change the lives of people affected by armed conflict through music) and the African Gospel Singers choir from Johannesburg.
