Bialystok Cultural Centre invites to 16th edition of ¿UNDERGROUND/INDEPENDENT?. As a part of our event we always present original, energetic authors, interesting works of art and film and original music groups as well.

FILMS:
SEARCHING FOR HELL dir. Pawel Nazaruk, Tomasz Adamski, Darek Barecki, James Kenney, Gloria Kurnik, Yuki Nakamura.
Searching for Hell starts out as a quest to discover the truth behind the story of digging a hole to Hell, the deepest bore bole in the world in Siberia in the 1980s. Five film-making teams embark on a journey to tell the personal and creative stories of people inhabiting contemporary Hell all over the world.The township-turned- theme-park of Hell in Michigan, a house converted into a morbid vision of Buddhist Hell in Japan, a deadly sulfur lake in Indonesia, and dark present-day Congo. They are all doors to Hell. This creative and original feature documentary-Searching for Hell-will walk you through those doors examining Hell’s geographical, cultural and social realities. REMAKE, REMIX, RIP OFF dir. Cem Kaya
Turkey in the 1960s and 70s was one of the biggest producers of film in the world even though its film industry did not have enough written material to start with. In order to keep up with the demand, screenwriters and directors were copying scripts and remaking movies from all over the world. Name any Western hit film, there is a Turkish version to it, be it Tarzan, Dracula, The Wizard of Oz, The Exorcist, Rambo, Superman or Star Trek. These quickly and low budget produced lookalike movies were adapted to the taste of local audiences with huge success in the Anatolian hinterland. What they lacked in equipment and budget they compensated through excessive use of manpower both behind and in front of the camera. (www.imdb.com)

THE SINGING NAPKIN dir. Mariusz Grzegorzek
THE SINGING NAPKIN is the first full-length feature film in art school history which is also the diploma of fourth-year acting students from the POLISH NATIONAL FILM SCHOOL IN LODZ. The film’s director, who is the rector of the School, Mariusz GRZEGORZEK created with young actors a beautiful, moving and ambiguous film. WHAT DOES THE NAPKIN SING ABOUT? OPTIMISTENE dir. Gunhild Westhagen Magnor

JUST EAT IT dir. Grant Baldwin
We all love food. As a society, we devour countless cooking shows, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash? Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping and survive only on discarded food. TÓNLIST: ICELANDIC MUSIC DOCUMENTARY dir. Stephen Beaven
What is it about Icelandic culture that produces such a rich vein of music? Tónlist features Icelandic musicians, music industry experts, journalists – while utilising the breathtaking scenery from across the island for some truly stunning visuals that are heavily prominent in the doc. Volcanoes from the air, record stores, waterfalls, hotdog stands, glaciers and magnificent beards.Prominent Icelandic musician’s such as Ólafur Arnalds, Ásgeir, Snorri Helgason, Múm, and Ólöf Arnalds are present to perform unique live performances in stunning locations and provide a greater insight into the ethos and character of Icelandic music. MUSIC:

STARA RZEKA
Stara Rzeka is second (and last) album is entitled “Zamknęły się oczy ziemi”. It’s a music project of Kuba Ziołek (composer, multinstrumentalist and singer known from Innercity Ensemble, Alameda 3, Ed Wood, Hokei, T’ien Lai, Kapital). The artist intrested in fusion of nature and technique creates music using among others: quitars, effects, brass instruments and voice.

NAGROBKI
the band consists of: Adam Witkowski (drums, voice) and Maciej Salamon (guitar, voice). 01.01.2014 was released first album “Pańskie Wersety”, which became the first polish album of 2014. All edition (17 CDs) was sold out in few minutes.

kIRk
kIRk is looking for new forms of expression at the crossroads of electronic and acoustic music. It is consists of three musicians: Paweł Bartnik (electronics), Olgierd Dokalski (trumpet) and Filip Kalinowski (turntable). Each of them grew up on other sounds so the best plane of understanding is improvisation. Progressive thinking and revolutionary approach intercity composition were appreciated by Swans leader – Michael Gira, the pioneer of future-jazz trumpet Nils Peter Molvaer and godmother of new sounds Mary Anne Hobbs.

PERERA ELSEWHERE
Sasha Perera: DJs under the name Mother Perera is probably most known for her role as vocalist & songwriter in the Bass music – mongrel pop band Jahcoozi (she performed in Bialystok during ŻUBROFFKA Festival) . ‘Perera Elsewhere’ is the new solo project of the London-born, Berlin-based artist who helped to establish a foundation of Grime and Dubstep in Berlin with her series of Grimetime parties and radio show years back. Her work with Jahcoozi experimented with multiple textures of electronic music, collaborations with an wide array of artists including travels to Kenya to work with local MCs. The band have a tour calender that most would envy.
