Films awarded at the ŻUBROFFKA Festival

We have the pleasure of announcing the winners of ŻUBROFFKA 2017!

The 12th edition of the International Short Film Festival ŻUBROFFKA has ended – five days filled with film screenings, concerts, master classes, exhibitions, discussion panels and meetings! 125 films selected from almost two thousand submissions competed for prizes in eight competitions.

The jury consisting of Qiu Yang, Marian Crisan, Gunhild Enger, Izabela Plucińska, and Grzegorz Brzozowski granted the following prizes:

Grand Prix of the Festival – The Prize of the Director of the Białystok Cultural Centre – 8.000 PLN to the film
CIPKA / PUSSY
director: Renata Gąsiorowska, Poland 2016

Jury’s reasoning: The film in an interesting and light way tells an important story about a woman’s body and sexuality. The jury is impressed by the director’s strong voice and is certain that her films will reach a wide audience around the world.

I Prize in the Eastward Window competition – 2.000 PLN to the film
LÁTHATATLANUL / INVISIBLY
director: Áron Szentpéteri; Hungary 2017

Jury’s reasoning: The film not only gives us a gentle insight into the unique world of darkness, but also brings us intimacy and a touching sense of imperfection of love.

Honourable Mention in the Eastward Window competition to the film

I Prize in the Whole Wide World competition – 2.000 PLN to the film

The Best Documentary Prize – 2.000 PLN to the film

Jury’s reasoning: An interesting look at the drama of the war. A powerful documentary showing the struggle of women.

The Best Fiction Prize – 2.000 PLN to the film
NIC NOWEGO POD SŁOŃCEM / NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN
director: Damian Kocur; Poand 2017

Jury’s reasoning: A perfectly made drama, filled with fragile characters, in a beautiful and natural environment. The jury is impressed by the convincing and human way of telling stories about social dynamics and the search for love.

The Best Animation Prize – 2.000 PLN to the film
O MATKO! / OH MOTHER!
director: Paulina Ziółkowska; Poland 2016

Jury’s reasoning: The film perfectly applies animation in portraying the relationship between mother and son and in reversing their roles. It was surprising us very often.

The Best Cinematography Prize – 2.000 PLN to the film
NYO VWETA NAFTA
director: Ico Costa; cinematography: Hugo Azevedo; Portugal / Mozambique 2017

Jury’s reasoning: We are impressed by the naturalistic but also beautiful image created by this film, especially the nostalgic warmth that we see on the screen.

The Best Music Prize – 2.000 PLN to the film
NAJPIĘKNIEJSZE FAJERWERKI EVER / THE BEST FIREWORKS EVER
director: Aleksandra Terpińska; Poland 2017

Jury’s reasoning: To create a movie, you have to choose music that will meet our intentions. The music in this film transmits the highest emotions and perfectly complements the history and drama of history.

NEW EUROPE TALENT AWARD, funded by New Europe Film Sales for the most promising filmmaker from Eastern and Central Europe to the film

Jury’s reasoning: An award for the most promising filmmaker who has a unique and characteristic voice.

On the Verge competition (experimental film and video art)

Honourable Mention in the On the Verge competition to the film
CURSE OF THE FLESH
director: Leslie Lavielle & Yannick Lecoeur; France 2016

Jury’s reasoning: This film, which is against our expectations, changes our assumptions about how relationships should be interpreted. Mystical, mysterious and hypnotizing narration carried out by lust and love and shifts the boundary of genres.Nothing is accidental, every connection between the characters has a precisely woven goal.

 

Amateurs competition

The jury consisting of Kaja Klimek (president), Gabriela Sienkiewicz, Monika Piskurewicz, Filip Sokołowski, Urszula Domysławska and Jakub Chomko granted the following prize:

I Prize in the Amateurs competition – 2.000 PLN to the film
BED SIDE STORY
director: Michał Łubiński; Poland 2016

Jury’s reasoning: We reward a work whose creators showed the courage to create a film in their own way. We like the fact that abstraction mixes here with absurd humor, and for a short yet concise form there is a huge amount of work and technical efficiency. Michał Łubiński, we beg you, STAY WEIRD!

No film was granted a Honourable Mention in the Amateurs competition.

The children jury of the Kids competition granted the following prizes:
